Twenty Nepalis awarded Australian Leadership Awards Fellowship (ALAF)
The Australian Leadership Awards were established in 2006 to develop leadership, build partnerships and linkages, and address priority issues within the Asia-Pacific region. Awards include Scholarships and Fellowships and are available across a broad range of fields relevant to Australia’s foreign policy and development priorities. ALA Fellowship recipients include current leaders or mid-career professionals with the potential to make short to medium term advances on issues of regional development importance.
Fellowships assist Australian organisations in hosting Nepalis for short term study, research and professional development placements in Australia.
Since the program was established 23 fellows have benefited from the program and forged links with Australian organisations.
For the 6th Round of the ALAF (to be mobilised in mid 2010), 20 Nepalis have been awarded the fellowship under the following five programs
• Increasing involvement of affected communities in responding to HIV from injecting drug use
• Developing capacity for advanced Urological Surgery by professional attachment of the Fellow to established Specialist Urology Units in Australia for improved health outcomes in the community
• Child nutrition and Infant and Young Child Feeding in South Asia: improving capacity for surveillance & interventions
• Bridging the Research-Policy Divide: Enhancing Expertise for Priority Problems in Health, Regional Stability and Food Security
• Strengthening the Internal Audit and Internal Control Systems within the Institutions of the Ministry of Finance in Nepal
